P1.04.32 Moving Forward in Early Detection: The ACS/NLCRT Best Practice Guide for Building Lung Cancer Early Detection Programs
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable (ACS NLCRT) has developed the Best Practice Guide for Building Lung Cancer Early Detection Programs to advance lung cancer screening (LCS) and incidental pulmonary nodule (IPN) management. Early detection is critical for enabling curative treatment and reducing healthcare costs but is hindered by a lack of coordinated patient management across health systems. Recognizing differing risk profiles and demographics between LCS and IPN populations, the Guide offers a comprehensive, flexible framework to establish, expand, and optimize early detection programs tailored to these nuances.

Created by a multidisciplinary team through extensive collaboration and iterative review, the Guide includes practical planning steps, embedded implementation tools, case studies, forms, data templates, risk calculators, and health equity resources. It is designed for a broad clinical audience including clinicians, navigators, coordinators, and program leaders, facilitating effective program design and operation. The Guide is open access, with embedded links and a comprehensive resource section drawn from ACS NLCRT member organizations.

ACS NLCRT leverages volunteer expertise to address lung cancer comprehensively, promoting evidence-based strategies and policy solutions to reduce disparities. The Guide will evolve over time incorporating advances in science, guidelines, and best practices. Developed in partnership with AstraZeneca, the US Lung Ambition Alliance, and the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators, the resource aims to catalyze coordinated early detection efforts nationwide, ultimately improving patient outcomes by prioritizing timely diagnosis and management. The Guide is scheduled for launch in December 2024 and is a key tool in national efforts to reduce lung cancer burden through early detection.
