P1.17.21 Gender Disparities in Remote Patient Monitoring: Analysis From 973 Lung Cancer Patients Treated Across 42 Sites in France and Belgium
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study investigates gender differences in remote patient monitoring (RPM) use and outcomes among 973 lung cancer patients treated at 42 sites in France and Belgium from 2022-2024. RPM, involving weekly symptom monitoring via patient-reported outcomes (PRO-CTCAE) and alerts to healthcare providers for severe symptoms, is a validated approach improving morbidity and quality of life.

Analysis revealed notable gender disparities in social determinants of health (SDOH), symptom burden, and treatment patterns. Female patients were younger on average (mean age 34.3 vs 64.0 years for males, p=0.001), had higher prevalence of oncogene-addicted adenocarcinoma (45.5% vs 31.8%, p=0.001), and more frequently received targeted therapy (21.8% vs 10.4%, p=0.001). Females displayed a greater baseline burden of digestive symptoms, general pain, and worse physical function.

Despite these challenges, female patients showed better adherence to RPM questionnaires at 24 weeks (84.3% vs 81.5%, p<0.001) and a higher rate of symptom grade improvement following RPM alerts (97.5% vs 93.8%, p=0.032), indicating RPM may reduce initial gender disparities in symptom control.

SDOH factors differed significantly by gender, with females more often experiencing unfavorable conditions such as financial insecurity, lower treatment understanding, and less caregiver support. Multivariate analyses controlling for tumor histology and metastatic status confirmed these gender-linked differences.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of gender-sensitive RPM approaches to address distinct social, clinical, and symptom-related needs in lung cancer care. Tailored RPM strategies could enhance equitable access and improve outcomes, mitigating the widening gender disparities evident in lung cancer treatment and survivorship.
