Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study evaluates the impact of a specialized Incidental Pulmonary Nodule (IPN) course series on professional development among multidisciplinary healthcare teams working in under-resourced and geographically isolated settings. The courses aimed to provide affordable, current, and quality education specific to IPN management, targeting healthcare providers including nursing and allied health professionals in shortage areas.

The IPN course series consisted of seven interactive modules covering topics such as AI in IPN management, establishing IPN programs, malignancy risk determination, diagnostic workup, safe detection and reporting, and surgical management. Participation data showed moderate to high completion rates, with around 34-56% of learners earning continuing education (CE) credits. Satisfaction rates were very high (97% or above), and the majority of participants expressed motivation to improve their clinical practice based on the knowledge gained. Notably, there was a strong demand for ANCC Nurse Contact Hours across all courses, indicating significant engagement from nursing professionals.

Learners reported improvements in patient assessment, understanding of therapeutic options, and awareness of cutting-edge science in pulmonary nodule care. The educational initiative added substantial value for multidisciplinary providers often practicing in non-academic institutions with limited resources, enhancing their skills in early lung cancer detection, which is crucial given the estimated 1.6 million IPNs identified annually in the U.S.

The authors concluded that IPN-specific education can effectively enhance current knowledge and practice within under-resourced healthcare teams. Future research will focus on expanding reach and providing education about lung cancer to these vital but often underserved groups, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes through early detection and management of incidental pulmonary nodules.

For access, the IPN course bundle is freely available through the GO2 for Lung Cancer Global Knowledge Center.
