Pdf Summary
This study quantifies the burden of tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer attributable to behavioral risk factors (BRFs) in 38 OECD countries from 1990 to 2021. Using the Global Burden of Disease framework, researchers analyzed deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and years lived with disability (YLDs) by age, sex, and country. Findings show that total deaths from TBL cancer linked to BRFs increased from approximately 376,488 in 1990 to over 409,502 in 2021, while DALYs decreased from 9.3 million to 8.7 million, and YLDs rose from about 100,000 to 127,000. Hungary, Greece, Poland, and Turkey reported the highest age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) in 2021, with Hungary at 29.21 per 100,000 and the US at 17.6 per 100,000. The highest death counts occurred in the 70-74 age group, and DALYs peaked in those aged 65-69. Notably, females experienced a greater increase in burden than males, with deaths rising by 49% in females versus a 2% decline in males. Behavioral risks accounted for 60.63% of all TBL cancer deaths in 2021 within OECD countries, with tobacco use responsible for nearly 60%, followed by dietary risks at 2.47%. The study underscores the dominant role of tobacco consumption in TBL cancer mortality and highlights the urgent need for coordinated public health policies and clinical interventions focused on prevention and early detection. Given the persistent and significant burden of TBL cancer driven by modifiable behavioral factors, particularly smoking, the findings call for strengthened strategies targeting these risks to reduce mortality and improve health outcomes across OECD nations.
