P3.14.09 Sex-Based Differences in Mesothelioma: Insights From the ICO Cancer Registry
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study analyzes sex-based differences in mesothelioma patients using data from the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) cancer registry between 2013 and 2025. The aim was to characterize clinical features, asbestos exposure patterns, and survival outcomes, given the absence of a national or regional mesothelioma registry in Spain or Catalonia. The registry included incident mesothelioma cases treated at ICO, capturing demographics, asbestos exposure history, clinical characteristics, histological subtypes, and treatments.

Key findings show that women with mesothelioma exhibit better overall and relative survival compared to men, as well as distinct patterns of asbestos exposure. Younger patients (under 70 years) and those diagnosed at earlier disease stages also demonstrated improved survival. The study highlights challenges in accurately capturing detailed asbestos exposure in retrospective research, limiting comprehensive risk assessment.

Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and survival calculations adjusted for age and sex relative to the general population. The study contributes valuable sex- and exposure-specific epidemiological insights from a multicenter hospital-based cancer registry.

The authors emphasize the need for prospective mesothelioma surveillance with systematic, detailed asbestos exposure data collection to better quantify the public health impact of asbestos and inform exposure prevention policies. Establishing such registries is critical for understanding incidence trends, enabling targeted interventions, and improving patient outcomes.

In conclusion, this research underscores significant sex differences and the influence of exposure and clinical factors on mesothelioma prognosis, while calling for enhanced data infrastructure to support mesothelioma research and public health strategies in Spain.
