This poster presents the development of a patient education video toolkit on lung cancer nodal staging, spearheaded by the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable (ACS-NLCRT). Understanding lung cancer staging is critical as it determines the spread of cancer (“how big and has the cancer spread?”) and guides optimal treatment sequencing. Since lymph node involvement is a key aspect of staging, clear and simple explanations are necessary for patients.<br /><br />The project identified a significant gap in patient-centered online resources explaining lung cancer nodal staging. Surveys of clinicians and patient advocates revealed widespread misunderstanding, particularly around lymph node locations and a lack of effective communication between clinicians and patients about staging.<br /><br />To address this, the team developed a six-part video series using a “5 W’s and 1 H” format (Why, What, Where, Who, When, How). Each video is about three minutes long, written at a 6th-grade reading level to ensure accessibility, and edited multiple times to include diverse demographics (age, sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic background). Six videos cover: importance of staging, what staging is, lymph node locations, who performs nodal staging, timing, and methods for lymph node examination.<br /><br />The toolkit is designed for universal patient understanding and currently available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, and Vietnamese. Future directions include expanding to clinician-facing videos.<br /><br />The project received support from ACS and Kindea Labs, and viewers can access the videos via QR code. This resource aims to empower lung cancer patients by improving their knowledge about nodal staging, addressing a critical step in their cancer management, and enhancing patient-clinician communication.
