Join the STARS (Supportive Training for Advocates on Research and Science) team on Thursday, August 21 at 15:00 MDT for a practical session on how to read and write scientific conference abstracts. The STARS Mentors will present live: Upal Basu Roy, Anne-Marie Baird, Jill Feldman, Lillian Leigh, and Andrew Ciupek. They will share tips and strategies to help research advocates better understand and talk about the research presented at conferences like WCLC. A live Q&A, moderated by Janet Freeman-Daily, will follow.
The program has been developed specifically for the lung cancer community through collaboration with lung cancer patient advocates, research advocates, and advocacy organizations from several countries. Its design and content draw on the experiences and lessons learned from research advocate training programs for other types of cancer, such as Project LEAD (breast cancer), Research Advocacy Network’s Advocate Institute, and American Association of Cancer Research Scientist↔Survivor Program. STARS tailors that knowledge to the needs of the lung cancer community.
After successful completion of the webinar, learners will be able to:
  • Identify and explain the key components and purpose of scientific conference abstracts
  • Evaluate and interpret scientific abstracts to assess their relevance and quality
  • Apply practical strategies to write clear, impactful scientific abstracts from the perspective of a Patient Research Advocate
  • Review abstracts submitted to WCLC and other lung cancer research conferences
