This study assessed the awareness and perceptions of compliance with the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Act among young adults in Lagos, Nigeria. A total of 319 young adults at the University of Lagos were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire.<br /><br />The findings showed that only 52.4% of the participants were aware of the existence of the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Act. While more than half of the respondents were aware of the prohibition of tobacco smoking in certain places such as public transport, schools, medical establishments, and indoor public places, only 28% were aware that tobacco smoking is also banned outdoors in public places. Less than half of the respondents were aware of the prohibition of tobacco advertisements.<br /><br />The study also found that a significant proportion of participants were aware of the legal age for buying tobacco products and the requirement for health warnings on tobacco packages. However, there was a low level of awareness regarding the punishments for violating tobacco control laws.<br /><br />Overall, only 14.1% of the respondents perceived a high level of compliance with the provisions of the act. The study also revealed that tobacco smoking in public places and the sale of tobacco products to minors were observed frequently by the participants.<br /><br />The study concludes that there is a need for necessary measures to ensure the effective implementation of the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Act. Despite having FCTC-compliant legislation, the low awareness and perceived compliance highlight the importance of improving awareness and enforcement to achieve the desired objectives of the act.
