This research study aimed to assess the awareness and reported compliance of young adults in Lagos, Nigeria with the Nigerian National Tobacco Control Act (NNTCA). A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 319 students at the University of Lagos main campus. The respondents completed a self-administered questionnaire that assessed their sociodemographic characteristics, tobacco use, awareness of the NNTCA, and perceived compliance with the law.<br /><br />The results showed that the overall awareness of the NNTCA among the respondents was low, with only 63% being aware of its existence. Additionally, less than half of the respondents were aware of the specific places where smoking is prohibited and the restrictions on tobacco advertising across different media. Furthermore, the study found that the perceived level of compliance with the NNTCA was also low, with 85.9% of the respondents perceiving a low level of compliance.<br /><br />When comparing smokers and non-smokers, the study found that smokers were more likely to be unaware of the law that bans tobacco sales to minors and the law that prescribes health warnings on tobacco products.<br /><br />In conclusion, the study highlights the poor awareness and low perceived compliance with the NNTCA among young adults in Lagos, Nigeria. There is a need for effective implementation and enforcement of the law to protect Nigerians from the harmful effects of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.
