Pdf Summary
The document discusses preliminary data from a prospective, woman-centered local registry on gender and lung cancer. The study aims to explore the impact of gender on the incidence, susceptibility, and severity of lung cancer, focusing on South American women.

The study included 100 women with lung cancer, with the majority having non-small cell lung cancer (91%) and the rest having small cell lung cancer (9%). The median age of the participants was 63 years, and 90% of them were postmenopausal. Most of the women had children (90%), with 69% having at least three children. Half of the women were married or living with a partner, and they had completed basic education.

Interestingly, 39% of the women were never smokers, but 69% were exposed to passive smoking, primarily in their homes. Additionally, 42% reported exposure to potential occupational or environmental carcinogens, such as kitchen combustion or agrotoxics. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological subtype observed (80%), and 40% of the women presented with stage IV lung cancer. Approximately 28% of the participants had a history of another cancer, predominantly breast cancer (18%). Family history of lung cancer in first-degree relatives was also relevant, with 33% of the women having such a history.

The study emphasized the need to further explore hormonal factors, occupational exposure, and environmental carcinogens in South American women with lung cancer. The data suggests that tobacco exposure remains the main risk factor for developing lung cancer in this population. The study also highlights the importance of including women with a history of breast cancer in lung cancer screening programs, as lung cancer was detected in their breast imaging controls.

Overall, this preliminary analysis provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of lung cancer in South American women, shedding light on the potential risk factors and demographic characteristics associated with the disease.
