This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and risk factors of osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The researchers assessed vertebral bone density and fracture occurrence in 289 NSCLC patients. They found that the prevalence of OVF at inclusion was 10.7%, with an average of 1.3 fractures per patient. At the end of the follow-up, OVF prevalence increased to 23.2%, with an average of 2.3 fractures per patient. The incidence rate of new OVF cases was 4 per 100 person-years.<br /><br />The study identified several risk factors for OVF in NSCLC patients. These included a low body mass index (BMI) (<19kg/m), corticosteroid use, and lower vertebral bone density. The researchers emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of OVF in NSCLC patients, considering the increasing prevalence of comorbidities such as osteoporosis in this population.
