Pdf Summary
Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OPVF) are a common complication in cancer patients, but little is known about their occurrence and risk factors in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. A study aims to investigate the epidemiological features of OPVF in NSCLC and identify predictors for its occurrence. The study included 289 NSCLC patients, with a mean age of 67 years. The prevalence of OPVF at diagnosis was 10.7%, increasing to 23.2% at the end of the study. The cumulative incidence of OPVF was 12.5%, with an incidence rate of 4 new cases per 100 persons-years. Multivariable analysis identified three significant predictors for incident OPVF: body mass index (BMI) less than 19 kg/m (aOR 5.6), corticosteroid use (aOR 4.8), and lower vertebral bone density (VBD) (aOR 0.98). The study highlights the relevance of opportunistic screening for OPVF in NSCLC patients. Identifying risk factors such as corticosteroid exposure and malnutrition should be part of a comprehensive prevention policy to mitigate osteoporosis complications. Further dedicated studies are needed to expand our understanding of OPVF in NSCLC. The study also emphasizes the importance of repeated chest-abdomen-pelvis computer tomography (CAP CT) scans for opportunistic OP screening. The study provides new insights into the prevalence and incidence of OPVF in NSCLC patients. In comparison to other cancers, the incidence of OPVF in NSCLC was relatively lower. The study contributes to the research on the predictors for incident OPVF in NSCLC, highlighting the significance of steroid therapy, BMI, and VBD. Overall, the findings of this study underscore the need for comprehensive management and prevention strategies for OPVF in NSCLC patients.
