Pdf Summary
This study aims to understand the molecular characteristics of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in individuals living with HIV or those who have received a solid organ transplant (OT). The suppression of the immune system plays a crucial role in the onset and progression of cancer, and PLWH and OT recipients are at an increased risk of developing multiple cancers, including lung cancer.

The researchers reviewed medical records of NSCLC patients from four participating institutions and identified 19 tumor samples from PLWH and 16 from OT for comprehensive molecular profiling. DNA and RNA sequencing were performed to analyze genomic and immune profiles. The results were compared to 99 matched controls.

The study found that targetable genomic alterations were present in the tumors of individuals living with HIV and OT recipients, highlighting the importance of comprehensive molecular testing in these patient populations. Important markers of immunotherapy response, such as PD-L1 expression and tumor mutation burden (TMB), were similar in PLWH, OT, and controls. However, different immune characteristics, such as the replication stress response defect score (RSRD), were identified.

The researchers emphasize the need for further research to fully understand the molecular profiles and implications of lung cancer in PLWH and OT recipients. While immune-related gene levels were similar across the three groups, RSRD scores were significantly different.

In conclusion, this study provides insights into the molecular characterization of NSCLC in individuals living with HIV or who have received a solid organ transplant. The identification of targetable genomic alterations and immune characteristics highlights the importance of comprehensive molecular testing in these patient populations. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of lung cancer in PLWH and OT recipients.
