Pdf Summary
This study conducted a cost-consequence analysis to evaluate the potential benefits of using artificial intelligence (AI) assisted image reading in lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). The study aimed to estimate the clinical and cost consequences of implementing AI-assisted image reading compared to traditional image reading without AI.

The analysis presented three scenarios: the control scenario, LCS without AI assisted image reading; Scenario A, LCS with AI as a parallel reader; and Scenario B, LCS with AI as the first reader. The results showed that incorporating AI-assisted image reading in LCS can reduce image reading costs by 37% in Scenario A and 73% in Scenario B. Additionally, Scenario B resulted in a decline in the number of CT scans assessed by radiologists and reduced image reading time, indicating a potential reduction in radiologists' workload and higher efficiency in LCS implementation.

The study found that AI-assisted image reading has the potential to significantly reduce costs associated with image reading in LCS. The results support the utilization of AI in LCS to alleviate constraints on healthcare resources. However, despite the promising outcomes of AI in the detection, segmentation, and classification of lung nodules, AI-assisted image reading is currently underutilized in clinical practice.

Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of incorporating AI-assisted image reading in LCS, including cost reduction and improved efficiency. These findings suggest that further integration of AI technology in healthcare can have a positive impact on lung cancer screening and resource allocation.
