Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of a lung cancer screening program at UI Health, a medical center in Chicago. The program, which began in 2015, utilized low-dose CT scans and was led by nurse practitioners. The aim of the program was to improve survival rates by detecting lung cancer at an early stage in high-risk individuals.

Over a period of seven years, 2,044 individuals participated in the screening program and received at least one CT scan. Among them, 59 cases of lung cancer were diagnosed, resulting in a detection rate of 2.9%. The majority of these cases (68%) were detected at an early stage (stage I or II), leading to improved survival and reduced mortality in the high-risk urban population served by UI Health.

The racial demographics of the cohort showed that 61% were Black/African American, 16% were White, 11% were Hispanic, 4% were Asian, and 7% fell into other or unknown categories. The results also indicated a stage shift towards early-stage lung cancers since the start of the screening program, with no stage IV lung cancers diagnosed after the baseline scan.

The study findings highlight the promising impact of the lung cancer screening program at UI Health. Despite serving a predominantly low-income and diverse population, the program achieved a relatively high detection rate and identified a significant portion of lung cancer cases at an early stage. This suggests that targeted screening programs in urban areas can effectively contribute to improving outcomes for high-risk communities.

It should be noted that there was a slight increase in the percentage of stage IV lung cancer cases in 2021, likely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of implementing lung cancer screening programs, especially in urban populations with high mortality rates, to detect and treat the disease at an early stage.
