The results also indicated a stage shift towards early-stage lung cancers since the start of the screening program, with no stage IV lung cancers diagnosed after the baseline scan.<br /><br />The study findings highlight the promising impact of the lung cancer screening program at UI Health. Despite serving a predominantly low-income and diverse population, the program achieved a relatively high detection rate and identified a significant portion of lung cancer cases at an early stage. This suggests that targeted screening programs in urban areas can effectively contribute to improving outcomes for high-risk communities.<br /><br />It should be noted that there was a slight increase in the percentage of stage IV lung cancer cases in 2021, likely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of implementing lung cancer screening programs, especially in urban populations with high mortality rates, to detect and treat the disease at an early stage.
