Pdf Summary
Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) has implemented a multi-disciplinary lung cancer screening program, which has proven to be successful in identifying and treating lung malignancies at an early stage. The program relies on collaboration between radiologists, pulmonologists, medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, as well as nurse navigators. The use of the EPIC electronic medical record system has facilitated the identification of eligible patients for lung cancer screening.

A review of outcomes from the LVHN program focused on patients who had a Lung-Rads 4 screening lung CT scan. Of the 5,311 scans performed, 4.14% were graded Lung-RADS 4. Out of 220 charts identified, 212 met the parameters, with 8 excluded due to follow-up issues or non-pulmonary malignancies. The majority of patients (83.5%) were reviewed in the thoracic MDC (Multi-Disciplinary Clinic), while the rest were followed by individual providers.

Of the patients reviewed in the thoracic MDC, PET-CT scans were obtained for 63.3% of them. Biopsies were performed on 66.1% of patients with a positive PET-CT scan, resulting in 42.9% biopsy-proven malignancies. Some patients (3.6%) were treated empirically without biopsy. The identified lung cancers were treated with surgical resection, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, depending on the stage.

The study highlights the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach and access to low-dose lung cancer CT screening in reducing non-small cell lung cancer mortality. The LVHN program has demonstrated success in screening and identifying lung malignancies at early stages. Further analysis is needed to evaluate the cost-benefit of implementing the Multi-Disciplinary Clinic and the outcomes for patients who do not participate in MDC evaluation.

The study provides valuable data on the value of a multi-disciplinary approach in lung cancer screening and identifies the need for future analysis on cost-effectiveness and comparative outcomes. The findings contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve lung cancer screening and early detection. For further inquiries, please contact Dr. Timothy Johnson.
