Pdf Summary
This study investigated the efficacy and safety of flexible bronchoscopy (FB) in elderly patients with suspected primary lung cancer. A total of 141 patients who underwent FB were included in the study and were classified into two groups based on age: those aged 75 years or older (elderly group) and those aged 74 years or younger (non-elderly group). The diagnostic rate and complications of FB were retrospectively assessed.

The indications for FB were similar in both groups, with nodules/masses being the most common indication. The diagnostic rate of FB was similar in both groups, with adenocarcinoma being the most prevalent diagnosis. The non-elderly group had a higher proportion of patients who underwent surgery or chemotherapy, while a greater number of elderly patients received radiotherapy or best supportive care.

The duration of the examination and the amount of midazolam used did not differ significantly between the two groups. The amount of oxygen supply after the test was significantly higher in the elderly group, but no patients had their discharge from the hospital postponed due to the effects of oxygen supply. There were no differences in hemorrhage, pneumothorax, tracheal intubation, or pneumonia between the two groups.

Overall, the study found that FB can be performed effectively and safely in elderly patients with suspected primary lung cancer. The results suggest that FB is a useful diagnostic tool in this population.

Keywords: bronchoscopy in the elderly, safety and complications.
