This abstract discusses a study conducted to determine if the use of a tunneled pleural catheter (TPC) affects the survival of patients with malignant pleural effusion (MPE) compared to the survival estimated by the LENT score scale. The LENT score scale is a validated system used to predict mortality in patients with MPE. The study involved a retrospective analysis of 54 patients diagnosed with MPE who received a TPC. Demographic and analytical variables were recorded, and statistical analysis was performed.<br /><br />The results showed that the use of a TPC increased the median real survival by 68 days compared to the estimated survival by the LENT score. This increase in survival was statistically and clinically significant. In particular, patients with better LENT scores (1-3) experienced a remarkable improvement in survival with the use of a TPC. However, poor prognosis patients (score 4-6) did not experience a significant improvement in survival.<br /><br />Based on these findings, the use of a TPC was considered not only as a palliative treatment for MPE but also as an active measure to improve survival. The study continues to explore the potential for further improvement in oncological outcomes with the use of a TPC.<br /><br />In summary, the study showed that the use of a TPC increased the median real survival of patients with MPE compared to the estimated survival by the LENT score. This suggests that the use of a TPC can be an effective treatment option for improving survival in patients with MPE, particularly in those with better prognosis scores.
