Pdf Summary
This study investigated the epigenetic silencing of MYO1E in a cohort of US veterans with lung adenocarcinoma and its effect on overall survival. The researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study including both veterans and civilians with biopsy-proven lung adenocarcinoma. DNA methylation and RNA expression levels of MYO1E were analyzed using methylation-on-beads and qPCR techniques, respectively. The study included a total of 91 patients, with 27 veterans and 64 civilians.

The results showed that veterans had greater tobacco exposure, a higher proportion of males, a greater proportion of stage I disease, and a higher proportion of African American patients compared to civilians. In the MYO1E high DNA methylation group, survival was significantly longer compared to the low methylation group. However, there was no significant difference in survival based on RNA expression levels.

After adjusting for various factors including age, veteran/civilian status, gender, race, pack-year tobacco use, and stage, the study found that DNA methylation of MYO1E was significantly associated with mortality risk. The absence of MYO1E DNA methylation on tumor tissue may drive biologic aggressiveness and decreased survival in veterans with lung adenocarcinoma.

The study suggests that MYO1E DNA methylation could be a potential prognostic biomarker for lung adenocarcinoma in veterans. Further multi-centric studies are needed to validate these findings and explore the use of liquid biopsy as a screening tool for lung cancer in veterans. The identification of biomarkers that can aid in early diagnosis and prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma in veterans is important for improving outcomes in this population.
