Pdf Summary
This presentation discussed a study conducted at Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital in Vietnam to survey the occurrence of lung cancer in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) over a period of five years from 2017 to 2021. The objectives of the research were to determine the proportion of lung cancer cases in IPF patients and to identify the clinical, pathological, and treatment factors for this group of patients.

The study found that the rate of lung cancer in IPF patients was quite high at 36.03%. The majority of lung tumors appeared in the right lung and lower lobe, which is consistent with other surveys conducted worldwide. The majority of patients with lung cancer and IPF were male and smokers. The predominant histological type of lung cancer in these patients was adenocarcinoma. Gene alterations in EGFR, KRAS, and ALK were common, which is different from what has been recorded in other parts of the world.

The study also found that the overall survival time for patients with lung cancer and IPF was low, around 5 to 6 months. The use of anti-fibrotic drugs was not yet popular, possibly due to cost and lack of effectiveness. There were also challenges in treating and monitoring patients with the co-morbidity phenotype of lung cancer and IPF.

In conclusion, the study highlighted the importance of IPF as a risk factor for the development of lung cancer. The high rate of lung cancer in IPF patients, particularly in men and smokers, indicates the need for increased vigilance in monitoring and early detection. The study also revealed differences in gene alterations and treatment experiences compared to other parts of the world. Overall, there are still challenges in treating and managing patients with the co-morbidity of lung cancer and IPF.
