Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with different nutritional statuses. The researchers used the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score to assess nutritional status and compared the overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) between patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy and those who did not.

The study included 139 patients with stage pII-IIIA NSCLC who underwent complete resections at Tohoku University Hospital between January 2010 and December 2018. The results showed that adjuvant chemotherapy was less effective in undernourished patients as indicated by a high CONUT score. Specifically, patients with a CONUT score of 2 or higher had poorer outcomes compared to those with a low CONUT score.

The analysis also examined various factors that might influence the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy. Factors such as age, sex, performance status, smoking index, FEV1.0/FVC ratio, Charlson comorbidity index, histology, pathological stage, pleural invasion, lymphatic invasion, vascular invasion, and pulmonary metastasis were considered. However, only platinum-based adjuvant therapy was found to be significantly associated with the efficacy of chemotherapy.

In conclusion, the study found that adjuvant chemotherapy was less effective in undernourished NSCLC patients with a high CONUT score. The CONUT score was identified as a useful nutritional score for predicting the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy in lung cancer patients. These findings suggest that nutritional support and interventions may be necessary to improve the outcomes of undernourished NSCLC patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Further research is needed to better understand and address the impact of nutritional status on cancer treatment outcomes.
