Pdf Summary
This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of oral bacterial lysates in patients with high-risk lung nodules detected by CT screening. High-risk ground glass nodules identified on CT screening often indicate precancerous lesions. The study focused on natural killer cells, which have shown potential in tumor immunotherapy. Bacterial lysates, which are immunomodulatory agents that enhance natural killer cell activity, were administered orally to patients with high-risk lung nodules, and the changes in the nodules during follow-up were analyzed.

The researchers screened 142 patients who had CT-detected high-risk ground-glass pulmonary nodules and were regularly followed up at the hospital. Of these patients, 44 had previously taken oral bacterial lysates as adjuvant therapy. The primary endpoint was the change in volume of the nodules after a 6-month follow-up.

The results showed that oral administration of bacterial lysates slowed the increase in size of high-risk pulmonary nodules compared to the control group. In patients with pulmonary nodules found more than 1 year ago, the administration of bacterial lysates reduced the probability of progressive disease. This effect was even more significant in patients with very high baseline risk probability of pulmonary nodules.

In conclusion, oral administration of bacterial lysates improved clinical outcomes and slowed the invasion trend in patients with high-risk pulmonary nodules detected by CT screening. The study suggests that bacterial lysates could be considered an intermediate endpoint in future chemoprevention trials for adenocarcinoma and could impact early lung cancer diagnosis and treatment guidelines.
