Pdf Summary
This study compared the symptom burden and functional impairment of thoracoscopic segmentectomy and wedge resection in patients with early-stage lung cancer. The researchers used the Perioperative Symptom Assessment for Lung Surgery (PSA-Lung) to collect patient-reported outcomes before surgery, on the first day post-surgery, and weekly post-discharge for up to 4 weeks. They compared the severity of symptoms, functional impairment, and short-term clinical outcomes between the two surgical techniques.

The study included 292 patients, with 76.4% undergoing thoracoscopic segmentectomy and 23.6% undergoing wedge resection. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the severity of symptoms or functional impairment during the postoperative hospitalization and the 4-week post-discharge period. Short-term clinical outcomes, such as postoperative hospital stay and total cost, were comparable between the two groups. However, thoracoscopic segmentectomy had longer operative time, greater blood loss, and a higher rate of in-hospital complications compared to wedge resection.

The purpose of the study was to assess patient-reported outcomes and compare the symptom and functional outcomes of thoracoscopic segmentectomy and wedge resection from a patient's perspective. The findings suggest that both surgical techniques result in similar symptom burden and functional impairment in the early postoperative period. Wedge resection may have advantages in terms of reduced blood loss, shorter operative time, and lower complication rate.

Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of patient-reported outcomes in different surgical approaches for early-stage lung cancer. It highlights the importance of considering patient perspectives in evaluating the effectiveness of different treatment options.
