Pdf Summary
This study investigated the effects of preoperative diabetes mellitus (DM) on postoperative outcomes after robotic-assisted video-thoracoscopic (RAVT) pulmonary lobectomy. The researchers analyzed data from 500 patients who underwent RAVT pulmonary lobectomy, with 86 patients having preoperative DM and 414 patients without DM.

The study found that among patients undergoing RAVT pulmonary lobectomy, 17.2% had preoperative DM. Patients with preoperative DM were more likely to experience postoperative complications such as atrial fibrillation. They were also found to have different cancer histologies, with a higher incidence of squamous cell carcinoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma, while patients without DM were more likely to have adenocarcinoma. Additionally, patients with preoperative DM were less likely to have cancer spread to lymph nodes.

Furthermore, patients with preoperative DM had longer hospital stays and decreased median overall survival time compared to patients without DM. This suggests that preoperative DM is a risk factor for postoperative atrial fibrillation, increased hospital length of stay, and decreased median survival after RAVT pulmonary lobectomy.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of considering preoperative DM as a potential risk factor for postoperative complications and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing RAVT pulmonary lobectomy. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and develop strategies to mitigate these risks for patients with preoperative DM.
