Pdf Summary
This study analyzed the outcome of stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and the impact of palliative thoracic radiation therapy. The researchers collected data from 1,107 patients with stage IV NSCLC and analyzed patient, tumor, and treatment information. They found that the use of palliative thoracic radiation therapy was beneficial, along with chemotherapy and the year of diagnosis.

The results showed a gradual improvement in overall survival (OS) over the years. On univariable analysis, older age, poorly differentiated tumor, and NSCLC not otherwise specified (NOS) histology were adverse factors. In contrast, the use of chemotherapy and palliative thoracic radiation therapy were beneficial. Multivariable analysis confirmed the significance of these factors. The 3- and 5-year conditional survival (CS) rates for patients in the lowest risk category were 71% and 61%, respectively.

The authors conclude that there has been measurable progress in OS for stage IV NSCLC patients, and palliative thoracic radiation therapy has shown a statistically significant survival benefit. However, as systemic therapy continues to improve, the role of thoracic radiation needs to be defined in a prospective manner to further improve survival outcomes in this patient population. The authors highlight the importance of modeling based on clinical factors and treatment received to identify patients who will benefit the most from therapy.

Overall, this study provides real-world evidence of the positive impact of palliative thoracic radiation therapy in stage IV NSCLC patients and emphasizes the need for further research in this area.
