Pdf Summary
In this study presented at the WCLC 2023 conference, the authors investigated the relationship between age and chemotherapy regimen selection for elderly patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The objective of the study was to determine the differences in the proportion of patients with impaired renal function between elderly and non-elderly patients, and its impact on regimen selection and survival.

The study included 164 patients diagnosed and treated for non-squamous NSCLC between January 2017 and July 2022. The median age of the patients was 71 years, and renal dysfunction was more common in the elderly patients. Elderly patients were less likely to choose a regimen of cytotoxic anticancer agents and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) compared to non-elderly patients. Specifically, regimens containing pemetrexed were used less frequently in the elderly. On the other hand, ICI monotherapy tended to be used more frequently in the elderly.

There was no significant difference in progression-free survival or overall survival based on renal function. The study concluded that renal dysfunction was more common in elderly patients with non-squamous NSCLC. Furthermore, there was a relationship between age and chemotherapy regimen selection in these patients.

This study highlights the importance of considering age and renal function when selecting chemotherapy regimens for elderly patients with advanced NSCLC. The findings suggest that elderly patients are less likely to receive cytotoxic anticancer agents and more likely to receive ICI monotherapy. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of these different treatment regimens on the outcomes and quality of life in this patient population.
