Pdf Summary
Researchers conducted a study to investigate the impact of tumor microvessel density (MVD) on response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). They evaluated 49 patients with metastatic NSCLC who received second-line treatment at Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine. MVD was assessed through immunohistochemistry staining for CD34. The patients were divided into two groups based on the MVD score. The study also analyzed PD-L1 expression and assessed overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) using Kaplan-Meier curves.

The findings showed that in the immunotherapy group, patients with an MVD score of 15 had better PFS and OS compared to those with an MVD score of 15. There was no correlation between PD-L1 expression and PFS or OS in the immunotherapy group. These results suggest that assessing MVD score in tumor tissue may be a useful marker in predicting treatment response to ICIs in patients with metastatic NSCLC.

The study highlights the importance of the tumor microenvironment in predicting response to immunotherapy. Tumor angiogenesis, indicated by MVD, could serve as an indicator of activated tumor escape mechanisms and inflamed tumor tissue. By considering angiogenesis as a predictive marker, clinicians can potentially determine the optimal treatment options for patients with metastatic NSCLC.

This research was supported by a grant from Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Scientific Research Projects Department. The findings contribute to the understanding of predictive markers for immunotherapy response in NSCLC and provide valuable insights for personalized treatment approaches in metastatic NSCLC.
