Pdf Summary
A study conducted in Sweden aimed to identify the selection criteria for the initiation of different first-line treatment options in patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC). The study found that the most prevalent treatment choice was immunotherapy in combination with chemotherapy, which was mainly based on the Multidisciplinary Conference (MDC) and/or the Swedish national guidelines. The two parameters that had the highest impact on treatment decision were the ECOG Performance Score and age. Patient characteristics affecting treatment choice were similar between sexes, with age being slightly more common in females and smoking status slightly less common.

Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadly tumor types, and the incidence of stage IV NSCLC in Sweden is around 1700 patients per year. The treatment landscape for newly diagnosed, metastatic NSCLC is rapidly evolving, with several new treatment options becoming available. The study aimed to better understand the parameters that physicians base their treatment choices upon.

In addition to patient characteristics, there may be other parameters guiding physicians in their treatment decisions that are not captured in registries. The study collected information on usage patterns that could provide important guidance for countries with limited access to certain treatments due to reimbursement restrictions.

The study was conducted in multiple centers in Sweden and included patients with metastatic stage IV NSCLC who had a treatment decision made. The primary data collected for the study was the physician's choice of systemic treatment and its link to factors such as age, performance score, and comorbidities. Other patient characteristics were extracted from electronic medical records.

The study found that the most common treatment choice was chemotherapy with immunotherapy, followed by best supportive care and chemotherapy alone. The majority of treatment choices were based on decisions made at MDCs and national guidelines. The most common factors affecting treatment choice were performance score and age.

In conclusion, this observational study in Sweden identified the selection criteria for the initiation of different first-line treatment options in NSCLC patients. The study found that performance score and age were the most important factors guiding treatment decisions. The findings can provide insights into current clinical practices and local variations in treatment choices.
