Pdf Summary
The document discusses the economic burden of Non Small Cell Lung cancer (NSCLC) in the county of Gävleborg, Sweden. The study aims to provide a detailed insight into the medical resource use and costs for patients with NSCLC in this region. The analysis is based on actual care received by patients.

The majority of the costs associated with lung cancer cases occur around the time of diagnosis and soon after. The study conducted a chart review of incident cases of newly diagnosed lung cancer in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Gävle Hospital during 2020. Data was collected retrospectively from patient charts, including patient characteristics, tumor characteristics, treatment details, adverse events, and resource use.

The analysis was performed from the economic perspective of the healthcare institution. Over 3000 health service events were captured, with laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and ambulatory visits constituting the majority of service events and patient admissions and therapy constituting the majority of costs.

The results show that the overall costs for lung cancer diagnosis and treatment are significant. The costs of diagnosis include various procedures such as bronchoscopy, biopsy, and imaging tests, amounting to a total of 371,578 USD. The costs of treatment, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, totaled 762,185 USD.

The study also highlights the costs associated with emergency department visits, ambulance transportation, ICU stays, and inpatient hospital stays. These costs, together with the costs of diagnosis and treatment, contribute to the economic burden of NSCLC in the county of Gävleborg.

Overall, this study provides valuable information on the economic impact of NSCLC in terms of resource use and costs in a specific region of Sweden. The findings can be useful for policymakers in making informed decisions and allocating resources for the management of NSCLC.
