Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a presentation at the WCLC 2023 conference titled "Outcomes of Limited-Stage Extrapulmonary Small Cell Carcinoma and Small Cell Lung Cancer." The study aimed to review the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma (EPSCC).

The study included 94 patients, 82 with limited-stage SCLC and 12 with limited-stage EPSCC. The primary sites for EPSCC included bladder, gallbladder, prostate, and breast. All SCLC patients had a history of smoking, while only 59% of EPSCC patients were smokers.

The majority of SCLC patients received definitive chemoradiotherapy, while only one EPSCC patient received this treatment. Half of the EPSCC patients underwent surgery with adjuvant therapy, compared to only 7% of SCLC patients.

The median overall survival (OS) was 25.8 months for SCLC patients and 16.2 months for EPSCC patients. The median recurrence-free survival (RFS) was 15.9 months for SCLC patients and 6.2 months for EPSCC patients.

The authors concluded that the survival outcomes of patients with limited-stage EPSCC may differ depending on the origin of the cancer. They suggested that multi-modal therapy involving local therapy and platinum-based chemotherapy could optimize outcomes for EPSCC patients. However, the choice of local therapy may depend on the origin of the extrapulmonary cancer.

The authors emphasized the need for future research to develop a standard approach to the treatment of limited-stage EPSCC.

Keywords for the study include extrapulmonary small cell carcinoma, small cell lung cancer, and survival.
