Pdf Summary
A systematic review was conducted to compare the outcomes of open, video-assisted (VATS), and robotic-assisted (RATS) thymectomy for the treatment of thymic neoplasms. The review included 54 cohort studies with a total of 6,650 patients. The researchers found that the conversion rate for RATS thymectomy was lower than for VATS thymectomy. The odds of experiencing any complications were also lower for RATS compared to open thymectomy. Additionally, the recurrence rates were lower for RATS compared to open thymectomy. The length of stay and 30-day mortality were also improved for RATS thymectomy when compared to open thymectomy. However, most of the studies included in the review were at a serious risk of selection bias. The researchers concluded that more clinical trials are needed to further assess the efficacy and safety of different thymectomy techniques for thymic neoplasms. The results of this review suggest that RATS thymectomy may offer better outcomes in terms of conversion rate, complication rate, recurrence rate, length of stay, and 30-day mortality compared to open thymectomy. Nevertheless, the limitations of the included studies raise the need for further research in this area.
