Pdf Summary
This study aimed to explore the role of nurses in patient advocacy in resource-poor settings, specifically for lung cancer patients in India. The authors highlighted the importance of educating patients and their families about their rights and home-based care. They emphasized that nurses are well-suited for this role and can help patients maintain self-esteem, establish good relationships with their social environment, and achieve better social participation.

The study included 82 lung cancer patients, all matched in terms of age and educational level. Eight nurses who had a keen interest in patient advocacy were included and trained. Patients and their relatives answered a questionnaire that assessed the patients' self-image and their relationship with the nurses. The results showed that cancer advocacy and education significantly improved the self-image of lung cancer patients compared to a control group. However, there was no significant difference in social relationships after the education.

The authors acknowledged the limitations of their study, such as the small sample size and resource constraints. They called for further collaboration and scientific projects to explore this issue in the lung cancer patient community. The conclusion emphasized the importance of nurses in advocating for patients and highlighted the need for more resources and support for nurses to become patient advocates in order to improve care outcomes in resource-constrained settings.

Overall, this study highlighted the role of nurses in patient advocacy for lung cancer patients in resource-poor settings. It emphasized the importance of education and support for patients and their families and called for more research and collaboration in this field.
