Pdf Summary
This study explores the benefits of a holistic approach to palliative care for patients diagnosed with lung carcinoma. The researchers followed a 42-year-old male patient with lung adenocarcinoma, providing palliative care support from the time of diagnosis. The patient underwent specific tumor treatments in three lines, but eventually transitioned to best supportive care due to his declining physical condition. Palliative Medicine Specialists were involved in his care whenever necessary, with a total of 21 consultations during the disease trajectory and 9 consultations during the best supportive care period.

The patient experienced persistent chest pain and fluctuating psychological well-being, ranging from pessimism and depression to non-acceptance. Social isolation also became a significant issue, impacting his psychological state. In terms of symptom management, pain therapy was adjusted according to the patient's needs, and other symptoms like nausea, hiccups, cachexia, and constipation were adequately treated. The patient eventually regained his ability to work and enjoy time with family and friends. Spiritual needs were also addressed, and the patient visited his spiritual guide.

Overall, the study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to palliative care for lung cancer patients. By addressing not only the physical aspects but also the social, spiritual, and psychological aspects of their lives, patients' overall well-being can be improved. The researchers suggest integrating this approach early in the disease course and implementing closer follow-up of patients' needs in regular practice, potentially through the use of mobile apps or remote access to physicians. By doing so, better burden control and improved patient outcomes can be achieved.
