Pdf Summary
This study discusses the implementation of early palliative care for lung cancer patients in a resource-limited setting in Indonesia. The authors highlight that in Indonesia, lung cancer is generally diagnosed at an advanced stage, leading to limited life expectancy for patients. Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families by addressing their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

The study focuses on three cases of advanced lung cancer patients who were hospitalized with severe dyspnea. The hospital where the study was conducted has facilities for diagnostic examinations but lacks lung cancer treatment services. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach involving pulmonologists, oncologists, cardiologists, nutritionists, nurses, and spiritual support was employed as part of the palliative care plan.

The first patient had a tumor on the right lung with pleural effusion and ascites, indicating metastases. After discussions with the multidisciplinary team, the patient and their family agreed to be referred to a hospital with better treatment facilities. The second patient had adenocarcinoma and was also referred for further treatment. The third patient had multiple masses indicating metastases and unfortunately passed away after undergoing radiological examination.

The study concludes that palliative care for lung cancer patients can be initiated as early as possible, even when they come to the hospital with suspected lung malignancy. It suggests that early palliative care can be implemented in health centers with limited resources, without the need for a separate palliative care unit. The study emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and highlights the satisfaction and acceptance of the patient's caregivers with the treatment plan.

Overall, this study provides insights into the implementation of early palliative care for lung cancer patients in a resource-limited setting, with the aim of improving their quality of life and addressing their holistic needs.
