Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to assess the quality of a thoracic oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting at the University Hospital Center of Tangier. The study found that MDT discussions are necessary for creating effective treatment strategies in thoracic oncology. Patients managed through MDT meetings had better survival outcomes and shorter wait times compared to those managed without formal discussions. The study evaluated 94 files out of 100 that met the inclusion criteria. The majority of cases had pulmonary primary cancer, with adenocarcinomas being the most common histology. The requesting departments for MDT advice were mainly medical oncology, radiotherapy, and thoracic surgery. The main topics presented at the MDT were radiological reviews and therapeutic decision strategies. Radiology and thoracic surgery were the most commonly requested specialties. Pulmonary nodules were classified as metastatic, non-metastatic, or indeterminate. The disease stage was downstaged in 28% of patients after the MDT discussion. The therapeutic strategy was decided for 65% of patients, with chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy being the proposed treatments. The decisions made complied with international recommendations in 84% of patients. The study concluded that while the MDT meeting met most quality criteria, more efforts are needed to improve the patient's care coordination in thoracic oncology. Regular evaluations of the MDT are recommended to ensure compliance with decisions and to study the delays in patient care for further improvement.
