Pdf Summary
This study examined the characteristics of patients with lung cancer who required unscheduled hospitalizations over a 12-month period. The study found that patients with lung cancer had the highest number of hospital admissions among all types of cancer. The main causes of admission were tumor-related, followed by infection, immune-related adverse events, venous thromboembolic disease, non-infectious chemotherapy-related toxicity, and heart failure. The median length of stay was 8 days. Out of the total patients admitted, 60% were readmitted or visited the emergency department within a median time of 33 days after discharge. The overall survival rate since diagnosis was 16.5 months, while the survival rate since admission was 3.3 months. There were significant differences in survival rates based on the cause of admission. Most patients (76.5%) died during hospitalization or follow-up, with some requiring palliative care and palliative sedation for refractory symptoms such as dyspnea, delirium, pain, and vital distress. The study highlights the higher incidence of hospitalization, limited post-admission survival, and chance of dying during hospitalization for patients with lung cancer, emphasizing the importance of coordinating with palliative care services to provide optimal support and care. The baseline characteristics of the patients included age, sex, stage of cancer, histology, driver mutation, type of systemic treatment prior to admission, and ECOG score at admission.
