The Lung Cancer Clinical Quality Data Platform (LUCAP) pilot study was conducted in Western Australia to capture clinical data for patients diagnosed with lung and other thoracic cancers. The study aimed to identify variations in care and improve the timeliness of diagnosis and treatment. A total of 296 patients were recruited from two tertiary hospitals, with a median age of 71 years and 54% male. The most common histopathological diagnoses were adenocarcinoma (46%) and squamous cell carcinoma (17%). The study found that all patients were discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT), but there were inconsistencies in documenting cancer stage and performance status. In terms of timeliness of care, only 19% of patients were seen by a lung cancer specialist within 14 days of referral, and 20% were diagnosed within 28 days. The median wait time from referral to treatment was 75 days, with only 17% of patients starting treatment within 42 days. The study also identified variations in treatment options across sites. The authors acknowledge that the findings should be interpreted with caution due to unknown case ascertainment. The LUCAP platform is expanding to capture data from all major hospitals treating lung cancer in Perth, and its feasibility will be evaluated in other Australian states. Overall, the study highlights the need for interventions to improve the timeliness and consistency of lung cancer care.
