Pdf Summary
The study examines the changing trends in lung cancer incidence among Asian Americans in Los Angeles County, California. It aims to understand how lung cancer risk changes in immigrants compared to their country of origin and the USA. The study utilizes publicly available data from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) volumes and compares age-standardized incidence rates among different Asian population groups in Los Angeles County with their counterparts in other regions of the world and with USA whites. The results show that there are differences in lung cancer risk between males and females. Among males, Asian American males have a substantially reduced risk compared to USA whites and their country of origin, regardless of ethnicity. Among females, lung cancer rates are about half of those in Asian countries and do not change with immigration experience. The study concludes that changes in cancer risk among immigrants likely result from lifestyle, behavior, and environmental factors and identifying these modifiable risk factors can help reduce cancer burden. The study also highlights the importance of exploring population-based cancer surveillance data in lung cancer research.
