Pdf Summary
This study analyzed the content of e-cigarette retailer websites in Malaysia to identify marketing claims, promotional strategies, and product details. It also examined e-cigarette use behavior, reasons for use, and user experiences. A total of 30 Malaysia-based retailer websites were identified and analyzed. The majority of the websites provided contact information and physical store addresses, but only half had age verification systems. Instead, most websites provided links to social media platforms. Marketing claims included health benefits, smoking cessation, and modernity/trend. Promotional strategies included discounts, starter kits, and email subscriptions. The products displayed were rechargeable and disposable devices, as well as e-liquids with various flavors.

The study also collected data from 302 e-cigarette users through an online questionnaire. The respondents had a mean age of 25.5 years, with 60.6% being males and 86% having higher education. About 47% were exclusive e-cigarette users, 28% were dual users, and 25% were former cigarette smokers. Common reasons for e-cigarette use included perceiving it as less harmful than cigarettes, avoiding cigarettes, and quitting smoking.

The study found that the mean nicotine dependence score among e-cigarette users was moderate. Factors associated with higher nicotine dependence included being male, dual use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes, and using nicotine e-cigarettes.

The content analysis of the retailer websites revealed a lack of regulation, accessibility to youth, and the promotion and sales of nicotine products. The study emphasizes the need for surveillance of online e-cigarette marketing and sales in Malaysia, as well as the regulation of e-cigarette marketing and sales to prevent youth access and initiation.
