P1.13. Detection of Lung Cancer in People Without a Smoking History Using Exhaled Breath as an Exogenous Probe - PDF(Abstract)

This study presented at the WCLC 2023 conference investigated the use of exhaled breath as a biomarker for detecting lung cancer in people without a smoking history. The researchers hypothesized that the rate of elimination of chemicals that can promote lung cancer or damage the human genome is an important factor for lung cancer risk. They compared the elimination rates of peppermint oil components in the breath of never smokers with and without lung cancer to determine if there were differences in the glucuronidation process, which is a major mechanism for eliminating carcinogens from the body.<br /><br />Seventeen patients with resected early-stage lung adenocarcinoma who were never smokers and nineteen never-smoker controls without lung cancer were included in the study. Breath samples were collected before and at various time points after ingestion of a peppermint oil capsule. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the breath samples were analyzed.<br /><br />The results showed that the elimination rates of peppermint oil components were slower in the lung cancer group compared to the non-cancer group. This difference was statistically significant for D-Linomene. Additionally, the elimination times were slower for 11 out of 17 VOCs in the cancer group compared to the controls.<br /><br />The study concluded that never smokers with lung cancer demonstrated slower elimination of peppermint components from the body, which may reflect the biotransformation pathway of inhaled carcinogens. The analysis of VOCs in exhaled breath after administration of peppermint oil could be a promising method to identify never smokers at high risk for lung cancer.<br /><br />This research contributes to the understanding of early detection of lung cancer in never smokers and highlights the potential of using biomarkers in exhaled breath as a non-invasive screening tool.
