Pdf Summary
A study was conducted to assess the awareness, understanding, and follow up of women with dense breasts. Out of 165 participants, 88 completed a Dense Breasts Questionnaire. Among those who completed the questionnaire, 89% were aware that they had dense breasts, while 10% were not aware, and 1% were told they did not have dense breasts. 74% of those informed of their density were told by a physician, 14% received a lay letter, 9% found out through additional testing, and 3% did not specify.

Of the 88 participants, 62.5% had a mammogram within the past year, while 37.5% did not. It was found that 89% of the women in the study were aware of their breast density, indicating proper communication of these findings. However, the results also showed that there is a need for clinicians to reinforce the need for follow-up scans for patients with dense breasts. There were discrepancies in the reading of patients' LDCT scans compared to their mammograms, highlighting the need for further discussion with clinicians and greater diligence of radiologists. The interpretation of LDCT scans also needs further improvement.

In terms of additional testing, 56 participants did not receive any, while 32 did. All participants who received additional testing underwent an ultrasound, and only one participant received both an ultrasound and an MRI. The density reported on the CT and mammogram was concordant in 87% of cases, while in the remaining 13%, the mammogram was reported as having scattered areas of fibroglandular density. Re-review of the mammograms confirmed that they were not dense in 5 cases, and images were not available for re-review in 3 cases.

Overall, the study highlights the need for better communication and follow-up for women with dense breasts, as well as improvements in the interpretation of breast density on imaging scans.
