Pdf Summary
A systematic review was conducted to examine the factors that influence the psychosocial outcomes of lung cancer screening programs. Thirty-two articles were included in the review. The findings suggest that targeted interventions can improve specific smoking-related or decisional psychosocial outcomes, such as smoking cessation interventions increasing readiness to quit. However, the impacts of interventions on other psychological outcomes varied.

Associations were found between service delivery components and psychological outcomes, but the evidence was limited. It was found that high-value discussion during lung cancer screening is important for reducing participants' psychosocial burden.

The review searched databases for articles published in English that reported an association between program factors and psychosocial outcomes during lung cancer screening. The study quality was appraised by two investigators and the findings were synthesized narratively.

While certain program factors were found to be associated with psychosocial impacts, the heterogeneity and quality of the studies suggest the need for more real-world research. Future studies should focus on examining implementation strategies and models of care that enable high-value discussion, as well as optimal methods and timing of risk and result communication, in order to improve psychosocial outcomes while reducing time burden for clinicians.

Overall, this review highlights the importance of considering program factors in the design of lung cancer screening programs to ensure positive psychosocial outcomes for participants. Further research is needed to better understand the specific interventions and delivery components that can improve these outcomes.
