Pdf Summary
The American Cancer Society (ACS) and National Lung Cancer Roundtable (NLCRT) launched an ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) program to address challenges in lung cancer biomarker testing. The pilot program was conducted in three states with high lung cancer burden, and based on favorable results, it expanded to eight additional states. The ECHO model aims to improve access to biomarker testing and increase health equity across the cancer care continuum.

The ECHO program utilized a state-based approach, fostering collaboration across the states and addressing state-specific barriers to biomarker testing. The program involved multidisciplinary learners from each state who participated in didactic and case-based presentations during sessions. There were both combined sessions involving all states and state-based sessions tailored to the specific challenges and solutions of each state.

The evaluation of the ECHO program showed positive outcomes. The majority of participants reported increased knowledge and confidence in lung cancer biomarker testing after participating in the program. Clinicians scored the highest on the post-ECHO survey, indicating improved confidence and knowledge. Participants also felt that the program helped them address common barriers to biomarker testing and activate changes within their health systems.

As a result of the program, participants reported taking various actions to increase and improve biomarker testing. These included coordinating multidisciplinary teams, providing clinician education, advocating for appropriate and timely testing, and establishing institutional champions.

The success of the pilot program led to an expansion of the ECHO initiative to eight additional states. The goal is to expand this evidence-based intervention to all 50 states.

Overall, the ECHO program has shown promise in addressing the challenges and disparities in lung cancer biomarker testing. By providing education, support, and collaboration opportunities, the program aims to improve testing rates, turnaround time, and ultimately, patient outcomes.
