Pdf Summary
This study presents the findings of a retrospective study conducted to investigate the incidence of thromboembolic events in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and RET fusions. The study collected data from 60 patients with advanced NSCLC and RET fusions, and electronic medical records were reviewed to extract data on demographics, clinical characteristics, and thrombotic events.

The results showed that 45% of the patients experienced a thromboembolic event, with 22% having deep vein thrombosis (DVT), 27% having pulmonary embolism (PE), 18.3% experiencing ischemic stroke, and 1.7% having marantic endocarditis. There were no significant differences in the occurrence of thromboembolic events based on sex distribution, smoking habits, histology, presence of diabetes, arterial hypertension, or dyslipidemia. However, patients who experienced thromboembolic events were younger compared to those without, with a median age of 55 versus 67 years.

Of the patients with ischemic stroke, male preponderance was noted in 73% of cases, and 91% of stroke cases occurred before the initiation of RET inhibitors. Stroke occurred in patients who were already on anticoagulant therapy, and multiple, disseminated brain lesions were common. Concomitant brain metastases were present in some patients with stroke.

The study concludes that patients with NSCLC and RET fusions have a high incidence of thromboembolic events, with ischemic stroke affecting more than 18% of patients. The findings suggest the need for monitoring for thromboembolic events and systematic brain MRI in NSCLC patients with RET fusions. The study highlights the importance of understanding and managing thromboembolic events in this patient population.
