Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a presentation at the World Conference on Lung Cancer in 2023. The presentation discusses the use of comprehensive geriatric assessments (CGAs) in older patients undergoing lung cancer surgery and their family caregivers. CGAs have been shown to predict complications and toxicity from cancer therapy in older patients, but there is limited information on their use in surgical populations and for family caregivers.

The study enrolled 183 patient-caregiver dyads and collected baseline CGA data from both groups. The majority of patients were 65 years or older, while 45% of caregivers were under 65. Women comprised the majority of both patients and caregivers. The caregivers reported better physical health and fewer comorbid conditions compared to the patients, but they had lower social support scores.

The study demonstrates that conducting CGAs in lung cancer surgery patients and their family caregivers is feasible. The results suggest that patients tend to be older and in worse general health compared to their caregivers. However, caregivers may experience decreased social support. The ongoing clinical trial will further investigate whether CGAs can predict outcomes in lung cancer surgery patients and caregivers.

The presentation emphasizes the importance of considering the unique needs of older patients and their caregivers in the context of lung cancer surgery. The use of CGAs may help identify potential complications and support the development of targeted interventions to improve quality of life for both patients and caregivers. The final results of the trial will be presented at a later date.
