Pdf Summary
This abstract summarizes the findings of the SYMPRO-Lung trial, which investigated the impact of patient-reported symptom monitoring on the long-term quality of life (HRQOL) in lung cancer patients. The trial compared two approaches - a reactive approach where patients receive alerts and an active approach where healthcare providers receive alerts based on patient-reported outcomes (PROs). The study included 515 patients with non-small cell lung cancer, and their HRQOL was measured using the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire at baseline, 15 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year after treatment.

The results showed that the weekly PRO symptom monitoring significantly improved HRQOL compared to standard care. No significant differences were found between the reactive and active approaches in terms of HRQOL and physical functioning. However, when comparing the pooled intervention groups to the control group, the intervention groups had a significantly better HRQOL. The intervention groups also showed more clinically meaningful within-patient changes in HRQOL compared to the control group.

These findings suggest that patient-reported symptom monitoring can have a positive impact on the long-term HRQOL of lung cancer patients. The logistically less intensive approach of sending alerts to patients appears to be equally effective as the active approach in providing HRQOL benefits. These results highlight the potential benefits of integrating PROs into cancer care to improve patient outcomes.
