Pdf Summary
The SYMPRO-Lung trial aimed to compare the effectiveness of two methods of patient-reported symptom monitoring on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of lung cancer patients over a period of one year. The study included 515 patients, with 266 in the control group and 249 in the intervention group. The patients in the intervention group used a weekly app to monitor their symptoms, and alerts were sent when predefined thresholds were surpassed.

The results showed that the intervention group had a significantly better summary score for HRQOL compared to the control group. However, there were no significant or clinically relevant differences in HRQOL between the reactive (patient receives alert) and active (healthcare provider receives alert) approaches within the intervention group.

Overall, patient-reported symptom monitoring significantly improved long-term HRQOL in lung cancer patients. The reactive approach of sending alerts to patients was found to be equally effective as the active approach in providing a one-year HRQOL benefit.

These findings suggest that patient-initiated monitoring of PROs can be just as effective as physician-initiated monitoring in improving HRQOL in lung cancer patients. This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of patient-reported symptom monitoring as a valuable tool in the management of cancer care.

Further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of patient-reported symptom monitoring and to explore potential individual and contextual factors that may influence its effectiveness.
