Pdf Summary
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the diagnosis of lung cancer in a German comprehensive cancer center is examined in this study. The researchers compared data from three different time periods: prior to the pandemic, during the pandemic, and after safety measures were loosened. They analyzed the number of newly diagnosed lung cancer cases and the stage of the tumor at diagnosis.

The study found that during the period of safety measures, there was a 17.3% decline in the number of newly diagnosed lung cancers compared to the period before the pandemic. After the safety measures were loosened, the number of cases only slightly increased. There was also a significant increase in the number of patients diagnosed with metastatic stage IV lung cancer in the post-pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period. Additionally, there was a decline in the number of patients diagnosed with stage I lung cancer during the pandemic.

These findings suggest that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the diagnosis of lung cancer, with a decrease in the number of newly diagnosed cases and a shift towards more advanced stages of the disease at diagnosis. The researchers attribute these effects to difficulties accessing the healthcare system and patients avoiding medical consultation during the pandemic.

Overall, this study highlights the need to address the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on cancer diagnosis and underscores the importance of early detection for better treatment outcomes.
