Pdf Summary
This study aimed to estimate the cost of radiotherapy for lung cancer in the Australian population and calculate the costs for local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) benefit based on the stage of the cancer. The researchers extracted data on all radiotherapy activities for lung cancer from a hospital in New South Wales, Australia over a four-year period. They used activity-based costing to calculate the average cost of a treatment course and the costs for LC and OS benefit.

The results showed that 454 lung cancer patients received a total of 30,535 radiotherapy activities. The majority had stage III or IV cancer and 55% were treated with curative intent. The average cost of activities per fraction was AUD 327 overall, with slightly higher costs for stage II-IV cancer. The average cost of treatment courses for 5-year LC and OS benefit were AUD 51,141 and AUD 90,481 overall, with lower costs for stage II cancer and higher costs for stage III cancer. The costs for a 1-year benefit in LC and OS were below AUD 20,000 for stage I-III lung cancer.

The study concludes that radiotherapy is an inexpensive treatment option for lung cancer, with the average cost for 1-year benefits below the accepted benchmark of AUD 50,000 per life year gained. This information is important for healthcare providers and policymakers in making decisions about the cost-effectiveness of radiotherapy for lung cancer.

Keywords: radiotherapy, cost, lung cancer

Track: Global Health, Health Services, and Health Economics

This is a regular abstract presentation at WCLC 2023.
