Pdf Summary
This study aimed to examine the disparities in the representation of older adults, women, and racial/ethnic minorities in lung cancer clinical trials. The researchers conducted a meta-analysis of phase II/III lung cancer clinical trials from 1989 to 2020. They calculated enrollment-incidence ratios (EIR) to compare the proportions of trial participants from different demographic groups against global estimates of incidence in those groups. The results showed that older adults, particularly those aged 65 and above, were significantly underrepresented in the trials. Women, on the other hand, were slightly overrepresented in the overall lung cancer trials, but this varied between non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Regarding racial representation, Black participants were significantly underrepresented, while white participants were overrepresented in the trials. Asians/Pacific Islanders and Native Americans showed no significant disparities. In terms of ethnic representation, Hispanic participants were significantly underrepresented. These disparities persisted in trials conducted within the US as well as internationally. The study highlighted the inconsistent reporting of inclusion and outcomes for underrepresented minorities (URM) in lung cancer trials. The findings underscore the need for addressing the underrepresentation of URM participants, particularly older adults, Black, Hispanic, and Native American individuals, in clinical trials. This is crucial for ensuring equal access to effective treatments and improving health outcomes for all populations affected by lung cancer.
